Book Review: Giving Makes Maury Happy Too!

By Natasha Chokshi, Contributing Writer August 13, 2026

All parents want to spoil their children, but sometimes that can leave them with excess toys and clothes they no longer use. Giving Makes Maury Happy Too!, written by David Maurice Sharp, is a heartwarming picture book that follows a young squirrel named Maury, who has more toys, books, and clothes than he needs.

Maury’s mother introduces him to the idea of charity and explains how some families struggle to afford things for their children. Inspired by her words, Maury decides to donate the clothes and toys he has outgrown or no longer uses. Later in the story, Maury takes his kindness a step further by visiting a food bank and volunteering alongside his friend Hopper.

Giving Makes Maury Happy Too! is full of heart and gently teaches children about generosity, kindness, and the joy of giving to others. I found myself feeling inspired to look at the things I have and think about what I could share with someone who might need them more. It is a sweet, meaningful story that can leave a lasting impression and, hopefully, encourage a more generous spirit in young readers.
