Looking for a NYC activity that feels a little different from the usual museum or family attraction? LUMINISCENCE is turning one of New York City’s most recognizable landmarks into an immersive light and sound experience.
Now playing inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Midtown Manhattan, LUMINISCENCE uses 360-degree projection mapping, music, and storytelling to transform the cathedral’s Neo-Gothic architecture into a moving canvas of light. It is the first time this internationally acclaimed experience has come to New York City.
The approximately 60-minute experience begins with a pre-show where visitors can explore the cathedral and hear live musicians before the main performance. The immersive show itself runs for about 45 minutes.
Select dates through November 15, 2026
The story is divided into three acts: Gathering, Community, and Nation, taking families through the history, heritage, and resilience connected to St. Patrick’s Cathedral and New York City.
As the lights go down, projections move across the cathedral’s walls, arches, and architectural details while music fills the space. The experience is narrated by Jonathan Roumie, best known for his role as Jesus in The Chosen.
LUMINISCENCE is open to all ages, making it an option for families looking for an evening activity in Manhattan. Children ages 2 and under can attend free when seated on an adult’s lap. Strollers are permitted, and the experience has accessible seating. Parents should know that the show includes strobe lighting, and food and drinks are not permitted inside the cathedral.
On select dates the experience offers LUMINISCENCE LIVE+, which combines the immersive projections with a live orchestra and choir performing inside the cathedral.
The live music makes these performances especially memorable, but the standard LUMINISCENCE experience still combines the architecture, projections, music, and storytelling into something that feels very different from a typical NYC outing.
There is also a meaningful connection to the cathedral itself. Proceeds from ticket sales support the restoration of St. Patrick’s historic Kilgen organ.
If your family loves light shows, music, architecture, or unique NYC experiences, LUMINISCENCE is a fun way to see one of Manhattan’s most famous landmarks from a completely different perspective.
